Lodore & Manesty

The ‘Jaws of Borrowdale’, King’s How and Castle Crag, create a dramatic view as you enter the valley which has inspired writers and artists, as have the Lodore Falls. The Iron Age hill fort on Castle Crag gave the valley its name, ‘Borgar Dalr’ or Valley of the Fort. The author Hugh Walpole would have looked over the lake to Lodore from his home at Manesty. Today much of the valley is owned and managed by the National Trust.
