Watendleth & Ashness

Watendlath is best approached on foot, walking through the ‘hanging valley’ gouged by glaciers, past Ashness Bridge and Surprise View. Imagine living in this remote hamlet in winter, chosen by the writer Hugh Walpole as home to his heroine, Judith Paris. Holiday accommodation, a tea room and trout fishery together with farming provide income for the tiny community. From here a pack horse route leads to Rosthwaite; before the introduction of the School Bus, children would use this to walk to school in Stonethwaite.
